Shutdown politics

Listen

The U.S. government has been shut down for a week now and so far there seems to be no end in sight.  What started as a fight over funding the Affordable Care Act, has now caused some 800,000 federal employees to be furloughed and thousands of federal offices to close.  As the stalemate continues, economists worry about the long-term effect on the U.S. economy, particularly with the approaching debt ceiling deadline on October 17th.  So why are we in this mess and what is the way out?  Marty talks shutdown politics with ROBERT COSTA, Washington editor for National Review.  Than what does the shutdown say about Washington and our dysfunctional government?  We get insight from NORMAN ORNSTEIN, a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute and author of  It’s Even Worse Than It Looks: How the American Constitutional System Collided with the New Politics of Extremism.
