Mary Beard on Rome & her book ‘SPQR’
Listen 00:48:45Guest: Mary Beard
How did a tiny village in central Italy rise to become one of the most dominant powers in the world, and one that still, two thousand years later, is influencing our culture, politics and worldview? This is the question that drove Cambridge University classicist MARY BEARD to write a new history of Rome and to make the case that this ancient history still matters today. Beard’s book is titled SPQR which, stands for Senatus Popular Que Romanus or “The Senate and the People of Rome,” and she comes in to talk to Marty about it.
