Hampton Sides’ “In the Kingdom of Ice”

Listen

Guest: Hampton Sides

[From the Radio Times archive] In 1879, the USS Jeannette sailed out of San Francisco harbor heading to the Arctic on an expedition to the North Pole. Unfortunately just two months into the journey, the ship became locked in an ice pack. For two years the ship remained stuck until the hull cracked and the ship sank to the bottom of the polar sea, stranding its desperate crew on the ice. HAMPTON SIDES tells this harrowing story in his new book, In the Kingdom of Ice: The Grand and Terrible Polar Voyage of the USS Jeannette. Marty spoke with Sides this August.
