Former Congressman Mickey Edwards on why political parties are the real problem with government

    Listen

In his new book, The Parties Versus the People:  How to Turn Republicans and Democrats into Americans, former Republican Congressman MICKEY EDWARDS argues that it is the political parties that are the root of dysfunction in American government.  He says our current political system discourages compromise and undermines democracy and says the only solution is to eliminate the negative effects partisan warfare has on government.  Edwards was a Republican Congressman from Oklahoma for 16 years and has been an outspoken critic of his party, contending that the modern conservative movement has lost its principles. He is a co-founder of No Labels, which describes itself as “a grassroots organization of citizens from across the political spectrum working to help move America from the old politics of point-scoring toward a new politics of problem solving.”
