Unaccompanied minors

At least 117 school-aged children who illegally entered the country at the border with Mexico have been placed with family members or sponsors throughout Delaware. The children were part of a recent wave of 57,000 unaccompanied minors who have entered the country since 2013. With classes set to begin next month, this week’s First Look shines a light on how one school district is bracing for a potential increase in enrollment.

State of Play: The State Treasurer’s Race

Just weeks before the Delaware primary, big changes are underway in the most-watched contest: the State Treasurer’s race. Joining us for some analysis of the latest developments are Stephanie Hansen and Michael Stafford.

Future farm

While the amount of farmland has decreased in Delaware over the past six decades, the state still remains strong in agriculture, with approximately 2,500 farmers and 500,000 acres of farmland. Some of those farms had to reinvent their businesses, such as one in Hockessin that’s been in existence for over 200 years. Thanks to a delicious desert it serves, it’s thriving.

Grateful for every bucket

The ice water buckets are everywhere. Thousands have doused themselves to raise awareness and money for ALS, also known as Lou Gherig’s disease, and while it might seem like another passing social media fad, those diagnosed with ALS are grateful for every bucket.

First Experience: Fort Miles

During World War II, at least 35 German U-boats patrolled off the coast of Delaware. Fort Miles, located in what is now Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes, was the nation’s first line of defense against a German invasion. Since 2003, the Fort Miles Historical Association has transformed this fragment of Delaware and national history into a world-class museum. First Experience stops by this week for a tour.
