Guest: David Grimm
[From the Radio Times archive] Last year Americans spent a whopping 55 billion dollars on their pets. The country has come a long way when it comes to its animal companions. Not only has pet ownership soared over the past fifty years, but also the rights of pets have increased dramatically. Once able to be harmed or killed with impunity, pets are now accorded with legal rights and are members of the family. In this hour of Radio Times, DAVID GRIMM discusses his new book Citizen Canine: Our Evolving Relationship with Cats and Dogs. He examines the ways in which the roles of animals have evolved in our lives and how societies have treated pets over time. Marty spoke with Grimm in November.
