    Guest: Cokie Roberts

In her new book, Capital Dames: The Civil War and the Women of Washington, 1848-1868, veteran journalist and political commentator COKIE ROBERTS introduces us to the women of Washington D.C. who worked behind the scenes during one of the most tumultuous times in American history. Roberts tells the stories of the wives, sisters and female friends of the nation’s leading male politicians and how they transformed from the “belles” of Washington society into suffragists, journalists, social activists and philanthropists in an era when women were often voiceless. Roberts’ previous books include Founding Mothers and Ladies of Liberty.
