Bottoms Up: On Spirits and Cocktails

    Listen

    Hour 2

Do you have a favorite cocktail?   An Old Fashioned, a Sidecar, a Martini, or a Vodka Gimlet?  Classic cocktails have seen quite a revival in recent years thanks to the popularity of the television series Mad Men. Set in the 1960s, the characters appear to drink cocktails morning, noon and night – even the pregnant women.  But whether you like vintage cocktails or more modern concoctions, fine liquor is at the heart of any good cocktail.  This hour, a conversation on the art and craft behind fine spirits and cocktails.  Marty talks with Washington Post spirit columnist JASON WILSON who has traveled the world searching out rare and classic liquors like Peruvian pisco and Italian amari.  His new book about his travels is called Boozehound: On the Trail of the Rare, the Obscure, and the Overrated in Spirits.  Also, COLIN SHEARN, bartender at the Franklin Mortgage and Investment Co. in Philadelphia, talks about pre-prohibition cocktails and life as a barkeep.
