Author Mary Roach on the science behind warfare

Listen 00:48:43

Guest: Mary Roach

Thousands of books have been written about war — the battles, the weapons, the strategy, and the heroes, but author MARY ROACH is more interested in the science behind warfare – the technology and medicine that’s been developed to keep soldiers safe. In her new book Grunt: The Curious Science of Humans at War, Roach explores the researchers and their military innovations designed to protect soldiers from pain, extreme heat, deafening noise and diarrhea.  Roach is the author of a number of other books including Packing for Mars, Stiff and Gulp.  She comes into our studio to talk with Marty about perfecting the tourniquet, bomb suits and projectile chickens.
