Andrew Cherlin’s “Labor’s Love Lost”

Listen

Guest: Andrew Cherlin

Marriage rates in the United States are declining.  Increasing numbers of men and women, particularly those less-educated, are forgoing marriage and instead choosing to live together and have children. Observers have pointed to increased work opportunities for women and changing social values as an explanation. But in his new book, Labor’s Love Lost, sociologist ANDREW CHERLIN offers another theory. He says that marriage rates and family stability are directly linked to the economy and with greater income equality in America and a dramatic decrease in lower-level jobs, working class families are on shaky ground. Cherlin, professor of public policy, returns to Radio Times to provide perspective on what most consider a disturbing trend and policies that can be implemented to reverse it.
