The ability to recognize oneself in the mirror is considered a sign of high intelligence and is relatively rare in the animal world. Humans can do it and so can great apes. But DR. DIANA REISS has shown that dolphins can do it too. Reiss, a professor of psychology at Hunter College and director of the Dolphin Research Program at the National Aquarium in Baltimore, has spent three decades studying the minds of dolphins and has found many remarkable things. In addition to having self-awareness, dolphins are creative, playful and communicative with humans. Reiss has written a book about these brainy mammals drawing attention to the serious threats they are facing in the wild, The Dolphin in the Mirror: Exploring Dolphin Minds and Saving Dolphin Lives.
