Winner picked in North Philadelphia primary

State Representative Angel Cruz fends off a strong challenge by Jonathan Ramos.

Nearly three months after the May Democratic primary, a winner has emerged in a bitterly fought legislative race in North Philadelphia.

Jonathan Ramos has withdrawn his challenge to State Representative Angel Cruz.

Ramos accused Cruz and his supporters of bullying voters and stealing votes in the primary. But he said he had to withdraw his challenge because one of the voters who signed his contest papers had moved out of the district.

Ramos: and the citizenry just can’t catch a break. The judicial system is just so complicated that little technicalities knock you right out of the box.

Cruz will now be certified the winner, but the attorney general’s office confirms it is still investigating the allegations of election day misconduct. Cruz says he isn’t worried:

Cruz: Let them bring the attorney general, bring the governor, bring whoever they want. We know we didn’t do anything illegal.

Ramos says he plans to challenge Cruz again in two years.
