What Happened Next: The ‘Happy Holow’ Rec Center sign

NewsWorks went back to check in on several of the stories it covered in 2012. These “What Happened Next” updates will run throughout December.

So, how do you spell the name of that rec center at Wayne Ave. and Logan St.?, Aug. 9.

The story: Days after NewsWorks cracked the case of roadwork-project signage which misspelled City Councilwoman Cindy Bass’ name up and down Germantown Avenue, area gadfly Allison Weiss sought our help to fix another pending concern. It seems that the Happy Hollow Rec Center sign had been misspelled as “Holow” for a quarter century.

We took Weiss’ concerns to Mayor Michael Nutter’s press office, which assured us that an upcoming Department of Parks and Recreation rebranding effort would remedy the situation.

What Happened Next: Nothing, as reflected by a photograph taken on Nov. 28.

While the Bass signs were all repaired posthaste, the Happy Holow playground is still awaiting its spell-corrective measures to take hold. We emailed Weiss for reaction shortly after checking back in on the sign.

“Funny you should ask. I have been thinking about it, the sign and your article,” she said, thanking NewsWorks for following up. “Shall I say, ‘it does not surprise me’?”
