What would Lady Mary wear?

Even with the shade of post-war uncertainty drawn about Downton, the pomp and circumstance of life upstairs in the 1920s begs for feathers and fancy.

As we settle in for the much awaited season three opener of Downton Abbey the Crawleys prepare for Mary and Matthew’s impending nuptials. We will see Sybill (in her delicate condition) along with her husband Tom return to the family home, bringing with them an air of social change that even Lady Violet can’t temper. And the addition of Shirley McClaine as Cora’s mother is sure to usher in a taste of unapologetic American sentiment.

So what to wear as the season begins?

The silk and velvet pieces of the early 20s begin to morph into sleeveless, lower cut looks. But no matter the fashion, elegance is in demand and the devil’s in the details at Downton. So pin up your hair or throw on your most dapper dinner coat, and get ready for another season of Julian Fellow’s saga of these Edwardian-style aristocrats and the servants who… well, – serve them.
