Water main break causes icy mess in Philadelphia

A water main break in West Philadelphia is causing an icy mess and disrupting traffic and mass transit.

Philadelphia’s water department says a line from a water main to a fire hydrant broke early Friday morning near 63rd Street and Haverford Avenue. Cars along the street are encased in ice as temperatures hover around 18 degrees. The streets are a slick mix of ice, slush and water.

Some trolley service remains suspended and motorists are advised to avoid the area as workers try to fix the break.
