Walnut Street Bridge construction begins today

A construction project along the Walnut Street Bridge over the Schuylkill river began today.

CBS Philly is reporting that the north sidewalk and parts of the road are now closed to traffic. In an effort to make the section of Walnut Street between 23rd and 30th Streets feel less like a highway, thereby slowing traffic and making conditions safer for pedestrians, the makeover will reduce the number of driving lanes from four to three, preserve a bike lane and widen the sidewalks from eight to 12 feet.
