Volunteer: Schuylkill River cleanups at Bartram’s Garden

Eyes on the Street readers sometimes send me the most interesting and inspiring questions. Earlier this year when I asked readers to send in their city hopes and resolutions I got several responses about wanting to get more engaged in community activities, but a lot of people wondered where they should start. One reader summed it up for me: “My profession really has little to do with the development of the city… other than being a resident/consumer, I really haven’t had a large impact here,” he said. “I’m just writing this as a guy with a lot of energy, but no solid idea on how to invest it into a positive for Philly.”

So to help connect people with opportunities to roll up their sleeves, Eyes on the Street will begin sharing more information about volunteering in the city and ways to get engaged in civic-minded activities. Many hands make heavy work light. If you know of a volunteer opportunity or are looking for something in particular, drop EOTS a line. First up, a Schuylkill River cleanup effort at Bartram’s Garden.

Tuesdays at the River Cleanups at Bartram’s Garden

United By Blue* will host a Schuylkill waterfront cleanup at Bartram’s Garden on the first Tuesday of every month starting today, from 3:30-5:30pm. Beautifying the banks of the Schuylkill along Bartram’s Garden and removing pounds of trash from our river is a worthy cause in and of itself. And just imagine the stuff you’ll discover along the Schuylkill – evidently tires, vintage electronics are pretty common.

Last year, United by Blue says they removed a total of 2,538 pounds of trash from Bartram’s Garden. And, as a reward for your do-gooder ways: There’s a cookout before or after each cleanup, and volunteers who attend three Tuesdays at the River cleanups at Bartram’s Garden qualify for a free Bartram’s Garden membership.

First Tuesday cleanups at Bartram’s Garden (5400 Lindbergh Boulevard) will take place from March to October:
