Volunteer effort brings new community playground to West Oak Lane [gallery]

Droves of volunteers turned out on Saturday to help build a new community playground in West Oak Lane.

The Martha C. Young Community Playground, located at 6007 Ogontz Ave., is named in honor an neighborhood educator who was in the mix with volunteers who poured concrete, spread mulch and, among other things, assembled playground attractions at what was once a vacant lot.

Residents were joined by volunteers aligned with the Prince Hall Alumni Foundation, Foresters life-insurance providers, national non-profit KaBOOM! and the Ogontz Avenue Revitalization Corp.

One of 150 playground efforts that KaBOOM! will assist this year, the design was based on suggestions and drawing from children at a “Design Day” event in April.
