Vineland City Council votes to accept federal firefighter grant

A second vote by Vineland City Council produced a different result on the much-debate issue of federal funding for firefighters.

After initially being deadlocked, the council voted to accept a $365,000 grant to hire two firefighters for two years each.

Thing were at a standstill earlier this month when some council members worried accepting the grant would inevitably mean laying off the two firefighters when the money runs out. But other city officials pushed for a second vote, saying retirement and other forms of attrition would allow the new firefighters to stay on.
