Union members, Rev. Al Sharpton to rally on Independence Mall

A rally scheduled for this morning on Independence Mall will bring Reverend Al Sharpton and many other area union leaders to the podium.

Their message is tied to one of historical importance as they honor the life and death of Dr. Martin Luther King and his fight for social justice.

Union members and leaders will gather between 5th and 6th Streets on Market at 10 a.m. to remember King and according to a statement released by the group, “decry Mayor Mike Nutter for his anti-union anti-worker record.”

They take issue with the Nutter administration’s battles with area firefighters over their contracts, and the possible privatization and sale of PGW.

The event will be held this morning from about 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
