Turkey giveaways feed hundreds in Northwest Philly this Thanksgiving [gallery]

In recent days, private companies and public officials have been working to ensure hundreds of needy Northwest Philadelphians have the turkeys they need for Thanksgiving dinner.

On Friday, turkeys and holiday food baskets galore were presented to residents at the Abbotsford Homes development.

Health Partners Plans (HPP) and Health Partners Foundation’s “Turkey Push” united employees from several companies in a relay race that brought 35 frozen turkeys and 35 wrapped food baskets to residents in the East Falls PHA development.

“Prior to the event, five baskets will be delivered to state Rep. Stephen Kinsey’s office and five to Mothers in Charge,” read a release for Friday’s event. “The remaining 155 baskets will be delivered throughout the day by HPP employees, to families in need.”

The Abbotsford event came one day before Eighth District City Councilwoman Cindy Bass hosted her annual turkey giveaway for 100 families.

Held at her newly opened district office in Nicetown on Saturday, the event also featured Raheem Brock, a Philadelphia native who was a member of the Super Bowl-winning Indianapolis Colts in 2007.
