Toynbee tile thieves provide ‘accidental benefit’

Thieves will always find the latest trends.

And when it’s not copper wiring, it’s the tiles embedded into city streets. Yes, thieves have discovered the value of Toynbee Tiles.
Hidden City has a report today about it. The tiles themselves are nothing new. But their profile has been raised thanks to preservationists and a West Philly-made documentary.

Oddly enough, the art thieves are indirectly helping. Though sturdy, the tiles eventually find demise when city streets get repaved. Unless of course, they’re stolen and sold to someone who will help them live on.
