Today is National Eat a Hoagie Day

“By the way, where do you get your hoagies here? Do you get them at Wawa’s? Is that where you get ’em?”

That bit of local flavor comes courtesy of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Today is “National Eat a Hoagie” Day, the day when the Delaware Valley’s name for a sandwich on a long roll wins out over all other regional terms. By the way, are you curious about where the name “hoagie” came from?  Well according to several sources, the local name comes from the workers on Hog Island Shipyard, nicknamed “hoggies,” who were fond of the sandwiches.

So even if you’re more familiar with subs or grinders, stop by your local deli for a hoagie.

What’s that? You’ve already finished your hoagie and you’re still hungry?  Not to worry. Today also happens to be “National Cream Filled Donut Day.”
