The Lorax in Chestnut Hill, Shipwrecked downtown, and a Village Fair in Mt. Airy

Feel the power of the tumultuous sea as you view Shipwreck! Winslow Homer and “The Life Line” on Sunday, September 23, in the Exhibition Gallery of the Perelman Building at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.  This exhibit focuses on the peril depicted in 17th to mid-19th century sea paintings. Family members of all ages are invited to “Storms, Heroes, and Dramatic Rescues,” 10:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m. at the Perelman Building. The US Coast Guard will share some expertise on boats, knot tying, and all things nautical! Join a family tour of the exhibition and try the kid-friendly Make-and-Take marine art project. Free after admission. Note: the museum is offering free admission to first responders (members of Police, Fire, Life Safety and Coast Guard forces and their families) from September 22 to September 30 to celebrate the exhibit.  

 

 

Do your kids miss the olympics?  Then run or speed walk down to the Penn Museum on Saturday, September 22 to meet photographer and journalist Diana Molina.  Molina speaks about her experiences among the Rarámuri people, the focus of her exhibition Run! Super-Athletes of the Sierra Madre, which is currently on view at the Penn Museum until September 30th. The Rarámuri long-distance runners, who live within the canyons of the Sierra Madre in Chihuahua, Mexico, compete on steep terrain in daylong races of up to 100 miles. A book-signing of the exhibition catalogue will take place after the lecture.  Free with Penn Museum admission donation: $12 for adults; $10 for senior citizens (65 and above); $10 for U.S. Military; $8 for children (6 to 17) and full-time students with ID; free to children 5 and younger. 

 

 

 

NW Philly Happenings:

 

 

It’s a very Seussical time in Chestnut Hill this weekend, with The Trail of the Lorax running all day Saturday.  This map gives a fantastic layout, with places and times of what’s happening and when.  Highlights include: the zoo on wheels, face painting, tattoos, The Cat in the Hat, cupcake and cookie decorating, a Dr. Seuss art exhibit, yarn bombed truffula trees, the Lorax movie, recycling and tree plantings!  Remember: “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better.  It’s not.”

 

 

After hanging with the Lorax on Saturday, head over to the Mt. Airy Village Fair on Sunday!  This wonderful community event offers plenty of food, vendors, and music. Other highlights include belly dancing, a pet fashioin show, and balloon animals.  Add even more excitment to the day by entering either the pie (1:30pm) or ice cream (2:30pm) eating contests, and may the odds be ever in your favor.  Greene and Carpenter Lane, Mt. Airy, 11am-4pm.

 

 

Kids growing again?  You’re in luck, because the Cooperative Nursery School is having their Kids & Women’s Clothing Swap on Saturday from 10am-1pm.  Bring $20 and the clothes and accessories you’d like to contribute, and take home as many items as you’d like!  Taking all sizes & seasons for women & kids… 6503 Lincoln Drive.
