Swathmore wins third place in green power competition

Pennsylvania borough Swarthmore has come in third place in a nationwide competition to use the most “green power,” including solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, bio-gas and low-impact hydro-power.

Thirty-four communities from across the country competed in the year-long competition. As reported by StateImpact, between September 2011 and August 2011, Swarthmore bought 27.9 percent of its electricity from green sources.

EPA mid-Atlantic Regional Administrator Shawn Garvin said in a press release that this proves Swarthmore is committed to improving public health.

Brookeville, Maryland came in first place, generating 45.7 percent of its electricity through green power sources. Washington, D.C. came in first place for purchasing the most green energy overall, at 772,324,379 kilowatt hours.
