Submit do-gooder photos to ‘Snaps of Service’ contest
Whether deliberate or without intention, every once in a while a photographer captures a moment of public service that unfolds within the frame of his or her camera.
At this year’s Memorial Day Parade in Bridesburg, WHYY’s Tom MacDonald caught a young scout saluting WW2 Veteran Ed Dubek with his camera phone. A simple gesture of recognition and appreciation at this small Philadelphia neighborhood parade, but now frozen in time with the snap of a shutter.
“It happened so quick,” remembers MacDonald. “I was trying to get a picture of the older gentleman and the young boy just came over before the 21-gun salute.”
As Independence Day rolls by next week, the Bipartisan Policy Center is looking to highlight these moments with its “Snaps of Service” photo contest.
The group is seeking image submissions that capture the idea of public service. This may be a portrait of a service member or public official, an “action shot” of a community member or group lending a helping hand, or something more abstract and informal.
The center will choose three winners and donate $500 to a local charity of the photographer’s choosing. Winners will be invited to attend BPC’s “National Conversation on American Unity” reception and town hall where their photo will be displayed at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia on July 22 and 23.
Submit your photo by July 5 to contest@bipartisanpolicy.org, via Twitter and Instagram @BPC_Bipartisan, or through Facebook.
