Students in several school districts in New Jersey walked out of class today to protest state budget cuts for education.

Senate education committee chairwoman Theresa Ruiz says she understands students are upset about the cuts in some programs and staff due to the drop in aid.

“It’s a group in the state of New Jersey that probably is going to be affected the most when it comes to the cuts that are occurring this year. A lot of them can not engage in the voting process and would consider this their opportunity to publicly speak.” says Ruiz.

But Ruiz says she would have preferred that students held their protest outside of school hours. She says disrupting the school day does not make anyone a winner.
