NJ college students take “green” housing to new level
Students from Rutgers University and NJIT in New Jersey are taking sustainable home-building to an entirely new level.
According to a story from The Star-Ledger, the students have constructed a futuristic looking home that challenges the traditional building techniques for green housing.
The group, called “Team NJ,” has created a one-story home that features a modular structure, precast concrete walls and an inverted roof that will catch both water and sunlight, according to The Star-Ledger.
In addition, The Star-Ledger reports solar and thermal technology is integrated into every exposed surface, which then produces enough energy to power the home’s appliances.
The home serves as the schools’ submission to the 2011 Solar Decathlon, which is a solar housing competition sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy every two years.
