Student arrested for putting cameras in bathrooms

Authorities have arrested a University of Delaware graduate student they say installed hidden cameras in campus bathrooms.

Thirty-eight-year-old Javier Mendiola-Soto of Mexico was arrested July 1, after the school alerted university police about hidden cameras in women’s restrooms around the university in Newark.

Police say they do not believe any of the 1,500 confiscated video files have been shared or distributed.

Mendiola-Soto was charged with 21 counts of felony violation of privacy, and is being held at the Howard Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington.

Authorities say they believe Mendiola-Soto had been recording videos for more than two years.

The university says it will conduct random sweeps of campus restrooms and changing rooms.
