State shuts down YMCA daycare after toddler left outside

The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services has shut down a YMCA daycare in eastern Pennsylvania where a 3-year-old was left outside alone last month.

Kim Johnson, president of the YMCA of Reading and Berks County tells WFMZ-TV that the daycare self-reported the incident, which occurred July 27.

That’s when two staff had 20 children playing outside in an unfenced area. When they came back in, the 3-year-old was unaccounted for. Other staff found the boy about 20 minutes later, with a dirty diaper.

Johnson says the employees watching the children were fired and the child’s parent was contacted immediately.

State and county officials decided to close the center after finding other violations during an Aug. 4 inspection. The center was shut down on Aug. 7.
