Southern Delaware lawmaker presses for property reassessment in Sussex County

A state lawmaker is urging members of Sussex County Council to reassess property values throughout the county – something that has not been done in decades.

State Senator George Bunting has sent a letter to members of council and County Administrator Todd Lawson asking that a meeting be scheduled with area lawmakers to determine how to proceed, according to The Cape Gazette.  Bunting expresses concern about the current rate of school taxes paid by residents in the southwester portion of the county, which he says are the highest rates in the state.  Bunting also proposes a nonresident tax in lieu of a reassessment to pay for expenses such as public safety.  Property values in Sussex County have not been reassessed since the early 1970s.
