The last time we heard from Gilda Jean-Louis, she had not been able to reach her sister. But on Thursday afternoon, Jean-Louis did hear her family was safe.

Jean-Louis: The initial reaction was of course my heart was elated and then right afterwards it just went flat there are so many others who don’t know or who are receiving bad news at this time.

Jean-Louis’ friend Giordani Jean-Baptiste still waits for news from Haiti.

Giordani: I been on the phone all day, all night, jumping thinking someone is trying to get to me from Haiti, that is the hard part of it.

Local Red Cross officials are encouraging people like Jean-Baptiste to register on a website established to help reunite family members.
