Skinny Joey out of jail, heading to Florida

After a decade in prison, Skinny Joey is heading to Florida. Joey Merlino, the former head of the Scarfo mob family, was convicted of racketeering in 2001 after his 1999 arrest. He earned a 14-year sentence, but was acquitted in 2004 of murder and conspiracy charges.

The Associated Press reports Merlino is doing what any other Philadelphia does when the snow is gone but the weather’s too cold to enjoy: he’s going to Florida. Merlino, 49, arrived there today, where he’ll spend the next six months in a halfway house. He’s got a job lined up, and his wife and daughters will join him there.

Attorney Ed Jacobs says there’s always the chance family ties (Not the mob kind. We think.) could draw Merlino back to Philadelphia.
