Senior living 2.0: New ‘Granny Pod’ may change elder care
The day may come when choosing what to do with an aging parent or loved one puts you in a difficult position. For years its been nursing homes or hiring in-home care. But with the advent and application of new technology, a third and possibly more viable solution for some families is available. And for about $125,000 a private, 12- by 24-feet MedCottage could be lowered into your back yard.
It’s kind of like a modular mother-in-law’s quarters: an addition to the home nicknamed the ‘Granny Pod.’
Delawareonline.com reports on what some are calling a revolution in eldercare. The MedCottage is “essentially a portable hospital room.” A Virginia company designs these “temporary family health-care structures” with help from Virginia Tech.
They are self-enclosed spaces that blend bedroom, kitchen, foyer and bathroom and are monitored by video surveillance and an online Internet portal from which family members, doctors and caretakers can monitor vital signs remotely.
