Saving the SS United States on CBS [video]

In case you missed it while sleeping in yesterday morning, efforts to Save the SS United States from the scrap heap were profiled on CBS Sunday Morning. We couldn’t resist sharing because PlanPhilly contributor Steven Ujifusa is featured in the segment. Devoted PlanPhilly readers will be deeply familiar with the SS United States, that majestic-but-rusting oceanliner moored in the Delaware River near Ikea, thanks to Steve’s coverage of the “Big U” for PlanPhilly over the last five years. In 2012 Steve’s book about the SS United States and the ship’s designer, A Man and His Ship, was published by Simon and Schuster. The CBS piece comes at a crucial time in the life of the SS United States, as the future of the ship remains very uncertain. “Without a major infusion of funds in the coming months, the vessel’s future is in dire jeopardy,” said Susan Gibbs, executive director of the SS United States Conservancy, at the end of 2012.
