Salem Unit 2 nuclear reactor shuts down after pump failure

Following a cooling pumnp failure, the Salem Unit 2 nuclear reactor shut down. The Lower Alloways Creek reactor went offline last night, and remained in “hot shutdown” today.

Today’s Sunbeam reports an auxiliary pump system began providing water to cool the reactor when the pump shut down, but a cause for the shutdown has not yet been determined.

The Federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission says the plant is stable.

Salem 1 and Hope Creek are still operating at full power. Salem 1 shut down temporarily earlier this spring for grassing.
