Police say a sailor heading to Texas became confused and beached his boat in Cape May County.

NJ.com reports Lower Township Police responded to a stranded sailboat on Diamond Beach around 11 p.m. Friday.

Corporal Robert Hartman says 67-year-old James DeGarmo was sailing to Texas when he got lost in the dark and beached his boat.

Hartman says DeGarmo was also suffering from an unrelated medical issue when authorities found him. DeGarmo was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Sea Point Village workers and the Lower Township Public Works Department along with Sea Tow Cape May towed the boat out of the water during low tide on Saturday, according to Sea Tow Capt. Jack Moran.

Moran, who posted a video of the boat being removed from the beach, said the sailboat’s keel was cracked from sitting in the surf zone overnight, forcing a land removal.

He added that the boat was not damaged during the recovery.
