Volunteers are tuning up their tax preparation skills to help those who cannot afford to pay someone to fill out their 1040’s.

RSVP Philadelphia is offering low to moderate income people an opportunity to have simple tax returns filed free of charge.

Richard Berman of the group says they work from the Klein Jewish Community Center in Northeast Philadelphia.

“The only qualification level is that their income not exceed $60,000 and that their taxes not be too complicated,” said Berman. “There are a few things that we can’t deal with but very few of our clients have those complications.”

Berman says the preparers have gone through extensive training, including annual updates on the latest tax code changes. They also will be helping people apply for assistance if they qualify.

“We can with some basic financial information assess which of the federal and state benefits they might qualify for and we can actually apply for many of them there is a uniform application for many of the social service benefits,” he said.

To get the free tax filing, you have to call for an appointment at 267-345-7787.
