Reading Market to offer special programs on Saturdays this month

Listen

The Reading Terminal Market is planning special programming for the four Saturdays left in October.

Filbert street between 11th and 12th will close on Saturdays for the rest of the month.  Anaj Gupta who runs the market says it’s to try out new things for visitors.

“We’re inviting local arts and crafts vendors that will set up their tables outside the terminal,” Gupta said. “We’re putting additional seating for our customers out there and we will have musical programming for the bulk of the afternoon.”

Gupta says the special events are designed to help merchants, and although he won’t say it’s to make up for revenue lost when the pope was in town, he does admit traffic was down that weekend.

“The lines were not as long as we expected, I think a lot of our regular and local customers were not around here during that period,” he said.

The market has won a grant to improve its Filbert street entrance, so the street closing will be monitored for future improvements.
