Authorities are investigating a shooting that occurred in Asbury Park Monday morning.

The incident occurred around 10 a.m. in the 600 block of Main Street near Seawall and Monroe avenues, according to published reports.

Witnesses say that a police officer was struggling with a suspect just before the shooting.

Contrary to earlier reports, authorities tell News 12 that the police officer was not shot. Rather, a spokesman from the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office tells the Asbury Park Press that the suspect was shot.

The police officer was stabbed, according to WABC. Emergency radio transmissions indicate that the officer suffered non-life threatening injuries.

JSHN contributors report that authorities from multiple agencies have cordoned off the area as the investigation continues late Monday morning.

Main Street is closed in the immediate area of the scene.

JSHN contributor Katherine M. said that she walked out of a Main Street restaurant into a chaotic scene.

“We saw people taken away in stretchers. There were the numbered markers on the ground for evidence,” she said.
