Update: Power restored in Northeast Philadelphia

Update: PECO says power has been restored across the Northeast after crews were able to gain access to the substation. No injuries were reported during the incident, but some electrical wires were damaged in the fire that broke the circuit.

Original report: More than 20,000 customers are without electric service because of a problem at a substation in Philadelphia.

Peco spokesman Ben Armstrong says crews are clearing smoke from a building at the substation in the city’s Holmesburg neighborhood to determine the cause of the outage.

 

He says a breaker problem may be to blame but it’s too early to say how long it will take to restore service.

The outage was reported around 4:45 a.m. and affects largely residential areas of Northeast Philadelphia.
