Police seek witnesses to fatal hit-and-run in Toms River

    A 27-year-old Colts Neck man was fatally struck by a vehicle that failed to stop after a Friday evening collision in Toms River, police said.

    A motorist traveling westbound on Route 37 spotted Jeffrey Michel lying on the side of the highway just west of Fischer Boulevard, according to Toms River Police Department spokesman Ralph Stocco. 

    Responding police found Michel unresponsive, and he was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene, Stocco said.

    The spokesman said that it appeared that Michel was struck by a westbound vehicle described as possible blue in color.

    Toms River Police Department Traffic Safety Officer Ken Thomas is conducting the investigation along with Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Detectives Mike Proto and David Margentino. The Ocean County Sheriff’s Office CSI Unit processed the crime scene.
