Philly police officer charged with fatal DUI crash

A Philadelphia police officer is facing multiple charges in connection with an off-duty car crash that killed the other driver.

The district attorney’s office said Friday that 45-year-old police Sgt. Thomas Winkis is charged with vehicular homicide, driving under the influence, involuntary manslaughter and reckless endangerment.

Investigators say Winkis’ silver Dodge Challenger struck a van around 11:30 p.m. on Sept. 14 in Northeast Philadelphia.

The driver of the van, 55-year-old David Farries, died in a hospital several days later.
