Phillies sign Dontrelle Willis and mistaken email recipient breaks the news
The Phillies have reportedly signed lefty Dontrelle Willis, but it’s the route of the message, not the news itself, that’s getting attention.
Deadspin reports a Phillies fan whose email address is similar to someone affiliated with the team accidentally received the confidential message announcing a “non guaranteed one year major league contract with lhp Dontrelle Willis. It is ending a physical exam to hopefully be administered on Thursday.”
That email appears to have been sent by Phillies GM Ruben Amaro and then forwarded to several others — including the unnamed fan.
CSNPhilly’s sources confirm the deal and say Willis be used as a reliever.
