Phillies deal Victorino, Pence

Phillies beloved out-fielder Shane Victorino is headed to Los Angeles, and right-fielder Hunter Pence has been traded to San Francisco.

The loss of the two players puts a period at the end of an extended period of mourning for Phillies fans: The 2012 baseball season.

Victorino will go to the Dodgers in exchange for right-handed relief pitcher Josh Lindblom and Double-A right-handed relief pitcher Ethan Martin.

The Giants are dealing their No. 2-ranked prospect, catcher Tommy Joseph, and outfielder Nate Schierholtz in return for Pence.

WHYY’s Elizabeth Fiedler is working on a reaction story for NewsWorks Tonight. She talked to annonymous blogger, of Zoo with Roy, and asked him why people feel sad when rich athletes are traded.

“I mean I’m not – this isn’t my position – but folks could just as easily say: ‘A dog’s not a person, why were you sad when a bus ran over your dog? It’s not your child.’ And you’d want to punch them in the face or the neck. I don’t think that’s the approach we want to take.
