Michael Nutter goes there as part of U.S. Conference of Mayors

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter is headed to the Gulf Coast this weekend for a first-hand view of the oil spill there.

Mayor Nutter is going in his new role as second Vice President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors. He says colleagues from New Orleans and other gulf cities requested the visit.

“They’ve reached to the U.S. Conference of Mayors and asked as many as possible to come and see what is going on there better understand their plight ultimately will be contained within the Gulf Coast region that there will be other ripple effects throughout the United States of America.”

The mayor also plans to join with about a dozen or so mayors to eat seafood in front of TV cameras to send a message that the food of the Gulf coast is safe.
