Philadelphia City Council to hear School District budget today

Update: The hearing has begun. You can watch it live through the City Council website, or on channel 64. If you can’t tune in, get the full report from Tom MacDonald later right here on NewsWorks and follow #phillyeducation on Twitter.

Original report: The first of two much-anticipated budget presentations will go before City Council this morning. School District of Philadelphia Superintendent Arlene Ackerman and Chief Financial Officer Michael Masch will be in City Hall to present the District’s budget.

With a more than $600-million budget shortfall, the District is looking for help from the city to make up for a decrease in state funding. Full-day kindergarten, transportation, art, music and athletic cuts are all on the table if more funding doesn’t come through.

WHYY’s Tom MacDonald will bring us the full report.
