Pentagon furloughs hit more than 1,400 in Delaware
Mandatory furloughs will begin this week for more than 1,400 civilians who work for the U.S. military in Delaware.
Monday marks the start of several months of furloughs due to budget cuts. According to Pentagon statistics, most civilian employees will be furloughed one day each week over the next three months. They must take a day off without pay, which amounts to a 20 percent pay cut.
The furloughs are the result of automatic spending cuts imposed by Congress.
Military officials in Dover tell The News Journal that more than 1,000 workers at the 436th and 512th Airlift Wings, the Air Force Mortuary operations and the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System will be furloughed. The Delaware National Guard also has 401 technicians who will be affected.
