Pennsylvania, New Jersey counties granted disaster area status after Irene

Chester County is included in a group of Pennsylvania counties that will receive federal disaster relief funds after Hurricane Irene stormed up the coast last weekend.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, President Barack Obama signed the disaster area declaration for the included counties today. The federal funds will be directed to local government agencies and non-profits helping the recovery effort.

In New Jersey, Toms River Patch reports Obama will award funds to more than a dozen counties throughout the state, including Camden, Cape May, Gloucester, Atlantic, Salem and Cumberland counties in South Jersey. Officials in Washington have not yet made an announcement about funds for Ocean County.
