Pedestrian struck, killed in Toms River

A 62-year-old Toms River woman was struck and killed by a vehicle on Fischer Boulevard in the township Wednesday evening, police said.

Shortly before 7:45 p.m., Ryan Price, 22, of Toms River was traveling north on Fischer Boulevard when he struck Kathleen Befumo, who was crossing Fischer Boulevard near Hazelwood Road, according to a release from the Toms River Police Department.

She was struck after making it across three lanes of travel as well as the painted center lane divider, the release said.

“It appears that Mrs. Befumo was not using a proper crosswalk and was killed instantly. The investigators do not believe alcohol or drugs played a factor in the crash,” the release said, adding that Price voluntarily submitted to chemical testing of his blood.
